Icy Weather Disrupts Flights Across Central Europe
Airports in Budapest, Bratislava and Vienna were all closed temporarily in the morning, according to local media.
In Vienna, runways were coated with a thick layer of ice that repeatedly refroze despite clearance efforts, a spokesperson said. Flights were diverted to other destinations as crews struggled to restore safe conditions.
Further east, freezing rain caused additional disruption. Prague Airport announced on the US social media platform X that it was operating in a “very limited mode.”
Bratislava Airport also halted flights due to icy runways, though officials said operations were expected to resume later in the day.
Budapest Airport confirmed it had suspended flights citing safety concerns. The airport warned of continuing delays, noting that arrivals would be restricted while staff worked to de ice the main runway.
The severe weather extended to the UK, where the Met Office issued a yellow ice warning covering much of western and northern Scotland from Tuesday into Wednesday.
Flood alerts remain in place following Storm Goretti, and a separate yellow warning for heavy rain was issued for southwest England on Thursday, raising fears of further flooding.
The Met Office said the risk of freezing rain — which can instantly coat surfaces in ice — would ease later in the day, with snowfall becoming more likely instead.
Freezing rain is a rare phenomenon in which liquid precipitation solidifies almost immediately upon contact with cold ground or infrastructure, creating hazardous conditions for transport networks.
